MSPGeek Member Spotlight – Greg Wenner
Where’d you get your start? Tell me about yourself.
The origin story – how’d you land in the industry, and how’d you find your way to MSP Geek?
I bought my first used server with allowance money at 15, from Penn State Salvage. Spun it up and hosted several websites, Exchange, and a bunch more off it. After college I went the corporate route, hated it, and lasted about nine months before landing a job at a small MSP in Lubbock, Texas. Started on the helpdesk and quickly worked my way up to automation engineer and platforms owner. I joined MSP Geek in 2017, shortly after starting at that first MSP, and it became an incredible resource that skyrocketed my skills and understanding of the MSP space. In 2019, I started Good Heart Tech, a nonprofit that provides free IT and cybersecurity services to other nonprofits, running as an MSP but for organizations that could never afford one otherwise, and MSP Geek has helped to transform Good Heart Tech into a full-fledged MSP operation fueled by community support.
2. What channels do you hang out in?
Which Discord/Slack/Forums channels are you most likely to be lurking in or posting.
Halo, CIPP, M365, Level, and Hudu. But I’m always on the lookout for new and interesting platforms, integrations, automations, and better ways of doing things.
3. What are three channels you wish MSP Geek had?
Get creative – this one’s supposed to be a little funny. No wrong answers.
”Nonprofits,” because nonprofits are their own animal, special Google and Microsoft nonprofit licensing, TechSoup grants, board members who still think IT is “the printer guy,” and needs other verticals never deal with. Honestly, we should be helping nonprofits out wherever we can, this would just make it easier to swap notes. “Confessions,” optional anonymous (somehow?), for when you mess something up. Doesn’t matter what, a bad script, a wrong client billed, a policy that nuked settings. Normalizing screwups is good, because everyone has one eventually.
4. What was your first post?
Take us back – what did you post (or reply to) the first time you showed up in the community?
I lurked for a while before posting, but I used to blast the ConnectWise Automate channel on Slack for ideas, and anytime I ran into a weird issue with Automate, which was pretty much every week when I was the Automate admin.
5. What advice would you give to a Goots who just joined?
The thing you wish someone had told you on day one.
Dive in, ask questions, and keep automating and building cool stuff.
6. What’s one thing you could “geek out” about for hours?
Technical, hobby, random obsession – whatever it is, this is your soapbox.
Automation and AI. It’s a whole new world out there now, and there are so many opportunities to make your life easier and add value to the people you serve.
